Des Moines is actually REALLY cool. The city has some of the nicest people, is known for one of the best Farmers Markets in the country and has a dope nightlife. (Not to mention our state capital dome is covered in over 100 ounces of gold!) Below, are some of our favorite places to check out. Not to brag, but most have been on the Food or Travel Channel!
Note: Click on the names to be directed to their website.

Eat

Malo: If you want some good latin food made completely from scratch, check this place out! Hailie loves the margaritas and Thomas always gets the pork belly tacos! (Also has a great brunch! HANG OVER FOOD)

Zombie Burger: “A post-apocalyptic-chic eatery with GOREmet burgers, shakes & more.” If you want a great burger with a spiked shake surrounded by Zombie decor, this is your place. Thomas is a big fan of the Dead Elvis and Hailie loves the Zombie Poutine!

Fongs Pizza: This is a must check out if you have never been before. It’s pizza, with an Asian flare. (Think Crab Rangoon Pizza!) This is one of our favorite date night spots.

Olympic Flame: Made from scratch Greek Food, in a cozy setting in the East Village. Pro Tip: Service is slow, but enjoy a bottle of Skouras Zoe Red, and the Saganaki (Ope!) while your food is prepared. This is Thomas’s go-to Gyro spot, and Hailie enjoys all of the vegetarian options.

Bubba: If you are in the mood for some southern comfort, this place has it all. Thomas is a big fan of their chicken and waffles and shrimp and grits.

Drink

Up-Down: Have you ever wanted to play pinball, or classic arcade games while drinking and eating pizza? Well this is a spot to check out. With two floors of old school classics, new school favorites, skee ball, pinball and, even console favorites projected on the wall. Wide selection of local craft beers and ciders with game inspired cocktails. You can get lost in this place for hours.

El Bait Shop: A fun bar with over 252 beers on tap. One of the best places to go to watch games in Des Moines and has great food as well.

Iowa Tap Room: A beer hall with over 99 beers on tap and a very Iowa menu to include pork chops and Iowa Ham Balls.

Explore

State Capital: No need to go inside, but just walking around the grounds of the State Capital provides beautiful memorials that provide a picture of Iowa history.

John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park: One of Hailie’s favorite places to walk around during lunch in the warmer months. This park showcases art from all over the world.

Historic East Village: The AC Hotel is in the heart of the East Village, which is full of unique shops and great restaurants. So explore away!

Raygun: With the tagline “The Greatest Store in the Universe”, this is one of our favorite stores. Full of hilarious knickknacks and fun shirts, this is a must see in Des Moines.
